Boards and Commissions

San Mateo County Commissions, Boards, and Initiatives that have seats for Youth Commissioners

 

Want to have your voice heard as a representative of youth in San Mateo County?  Want to advise county officials and advocate for change?  The San Mateo County Youth Commission pairs interested youth with a County Board, Commission, or Initiative, where they serve for a year as a youth liaison. There are a variety of Boards and Commissions that the Youth Commission has had placements on over the years. This year we currently have youth sitting on:

 

Commission on the Status of Women

Promotes changes that meet the needs of women, girls and families, including expanding opportunities for education and employment and addressing gender discrimination. Meets 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:30pm, in Redwood City. Current Youth Commissioner: Bharathi Chinnakotla

 

First 5 San Mateo County Commission

Works to expand and improve early childhood services so that all children can have an equal opportunity for healthy development and future success.  Meets 4th Monday of each month from 4-6pm, in San Mateo. Current Youth Commissioners: Felipe Afanador and Maxwell Weinstein.

 

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Recovery Commission

Evaluates the needs of individuals with mental health problems in order to provide assistance and resources and eliminate negative attitudes toward mental illness.  Meets 1st Wednesday of each month from 3-5pm, in San Mateo. Current Youth Commissioners: Kelly Liang and Cheryn Lam

 

Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council

A group of influential leaders from different fields who work to improve the lives of children, youth and families in San Mateo County. Meetings on a rotating basis in Redwood City. Current Youth Commissioners: Amir Amerian, Noah Weinstein, and Amirah Tulloch.

 

HIV Board

Advises the San Mateo County STD/HIV Program and provides ongoing direction about program policy, planning and development of all HIV/AIDS prevention and care services for San Mateo County residents.  Meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 5:30-7:30pm, in San Mateo. Current Youth Commissioners: Nidhi Bandrapalli, Zoe Chien, and Araceli Efigenio.


Fatherhood Collaborative Advisory Board

Believes in and supports the involvement of men and fathers in the lives of their children and families. Meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 2-3:30pm, in Belmont. Current Youth Commissioners: Nicole Briedis and Christine Pubill.

 

Parks Commission

Guides the Parks Department on issues including parkland use, acquisitions and development of land, recreational use of County parks, and permits and fees.  Meets the 1st Thursday of every other month from 4—5:30pm, in Redwood City. Current Youth Commissioner: Henry Ruehl.

 

Pride Initiative

Addresses problems that affect the LGBTQQI community, including promoting inclusiveness and equality of LGBTQQI individuals.  Meets 1st Wednesday of every month from 3:30-5pm, in San Mateo. Current Youth Commissioners: Zoe Chien, Samantha Siu, and Bryce Zurcher.


Commission on Disabilities

Discusses issues and problems that affect people with disabilities, such as discrimination, accessibility, and community participation. Meets every 4th Thursday of the month from 3-5pm, in San Mateo. Current Youth Commissioner: Mei-Mei Chun Moy.


Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention Commission

Addresses problems that affect the Juvenile Justice & Delinquency community, including. Meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 5:15-7:15pm, in Redwood Ctiy. Current Youth Commissioner: Michael Stark


Respect! 24/7 Anti-Bullying Initiative

Aims to reduce incidents of bullying and to empower children and youth to exhibit leadership on theis issue. Meetings on a rotating basis in Redwood Shores. Current Youth Commissioner: Chloe Cheng and James Ford.

Child Abuse Prevention Council

Prevents child abuse by advocating in the community and coordinating resources and raising community awareness through education and training. Meets every 3rd Monday of the month from 2:45-4pm, in San Mateo.


Commission on Aging

Promotes the independence, health, and social/community involvement of older adults in San Mateo County. Meets every 2nd Monday of the month from 9-11am, in San Mateo.

 

Arts Commission

Promotes and encourage the arts, serving in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors, to prepare and update the County’s strategic and cultural plan and act as a liaison with arts organizations in order to ensure collaboration and coordination related to culture and art activities in San Mateo County.  Meets 2nd Wednesday of even-numbered months, 1:30 – 3pm in Redwood City.
